// Who I am

The name,
the handle,
the story.

I’ve been Gary Walker in the real world for a while now. In online spaces I’m BitCryptic — a handle I’ve used long enough that it’s become its own kind of identity. I hold the trademark and use it across most platforms.

This site is a place to connect those two identities and give some context to both. I’m not selling anything here, and I’m not looking to impress anyone in particular. It’s just a quiet corner of the web where I can point people who want to know more about where I’ve been and what I’m currently poking at.

The tagline “friendly tech experience” has been with BitCryptic from the start. It says something I believe: that technology should feel accessible, not intimidating — regardless of how deep you go with it.

// Career timeline

Four decades,
from copper wire to blockchain.

1985 — 1989

Communications Technician

Telecom Australia (now Telstra)

Started my career at the ground level of Australia's national telecommunications infrastructure, working on the physical and technical foundations of what would eventually become the modern communications network.

Technical Roles — Networking, Programming & Internet

University of Ballarat, Computer Services

Transitioned into the university sector during a pivotal period in Australian computing. Worked across networking, programming, and was involved in some of the earliest internet deployments in the region — when the internet was still something most people had never heard of.

Co-Founder

Ballarat NetConnect → NetConnect Communications

Co-founded one of Australia's earliest ISPs with a group of friends. What started as Ballarat NetConnect grew into NetConnect Communications — a regional internet provider that was ahead of its time. The business was acquired by Chariot Internet around 1999.

Post-Acquisition Integration Lead

Chariot Internet

Continued at Chariot following the acquisition, playing a central role in acquiring and integrating more than 40 other businesses over eight years. A master class in the operational complexity of rolling up a fragmented industry during the broadband boom.

Co-Founder & Technical Lead

Fetch TV

Co-founded Fetch TV — Australia's first commercial IPTV platform. Attracted major investment, partnered with Astro TV Malaysia, and signed all of Australia's major ISPs as wholesale customers. Led all technical aspects: set-top box design, content security, network and CDN architecture, and customer management systems. Fetch TV continues to operate today with Telstra as 51% shareholder.
